If you can smell mold in your home, you probably have a mold problem. If you can see mold on walls, in corners or on objects, you should get rid of it, plain and simple.

The IICRC outlines five major principles of mold remediation.

1.      Make sure safety and health precautions are taken by cleanup professionals and occupants. Mold-contaminated buildings can be associated with a number of health problems. Anyone involved in the mold remediation process must be protected from exposure through a combination of practices and controls.

2.      A post-cleanup assessment by an independent environmental expert. An effective mold remediation cannot be developed without first determining the extent of the contamination to be removed. To ensure that remediation work is being properly performed, it is highly recommended that appropriate documentation of the remediation process be kept by project management

3.      Control of mold before it spreads further. Eliminating mold at the source of contamination is essential. Once mold spores spread through the air, it will be much more difficult to capture.

4.      Oversee the proper physical removal of the mold. The mold must be physically removed from the structure. Attempts to isolate mold or remove signs of mold on the surface are not adequate. Note that bleach alone cannot kill mold.

5.      Ensure that moisture is controlled to limit future contamination or re-contamination. Mold growth is virtually inevitable if moisture is not controlled. Moisture problems must be identified, located and corrected or controlled as soon as possible.

Mold remediation should really only be done by a professional since its living and has potential for growth unless properly taken care of, make sure the company you choose is certified in this area or it could have negative effects down the road. Our team here at CTR has extensive experience in mold remediation in commercial and residential properties. Call CTR – Cleanup and Total Restoration to have one of our certified professionals help ensure the safe removal, disposal & repair of the affected areas

Sometimes roofs develop leaks years before the entire roof needs replacing. Usually these leaks are caused by localized damage, such as cracked or missing shingles or shakes.  On a flat roof they can be caused by a blistered or cracked area. With spring showers, remember to protect your home!  Most homeowners don’t realize there is a leak until it’s too late. A rainy spring season could mean leaky roofs that will cause water damage to the interior of your home. Call the experts at CTR - Cleanup & Total Restoration, 208-377-1877. Our professionals can provide quality roof repairs for your home before there are any major problems and, like always you can count on CTR for 24hr emergency services in the event of a roofing disaster!

Q: What is a "snowmelt flood"?

When melting snow is a major source of the water involved in a flood, it is considered a snowmelt flood. Snowpacks store water. Unlike rainfall, which reaches the soil almost immediately, snow stores the water for some time until it melts, delaying the arrival of water at the soil for days, weeks, or even months. Once it does reach the soil, water from snowmelt behaves much as it would if it had come from rain instead of snow - the water either infiltrates into the soil or it runs off (or both). Flooding can occur whenever the rate of water input exceeds the ability of the soil to absorb it or when the amount of water exceeds natural storage capacities in soil, rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

Q: Are snowmelt floods common? Are they severe?

Some snowmelt flooding occurs every year in the northern U.S. Most events are relatively minor

Disastrous fires that cause smoke damage are not the only ways to get smoke damage in the home. People who smoke inside often have smoke damage along upper walls and ceilings of their homes. Over time, these surfaces will develop a yellowish stain and the smoke odor can be difficult to remove due to penetration and absorption into building materials. Let the professionals at CTR Cleanup & Total Restoration help bring your property back to a pre-loss condition. We are highly trained and skilled in procedures to remedy tobacco smoke & odors returning homes to their original condition cost-effectively and in the shortest time possible.
